What did it take to get into DS5?

by Andy Kriebel

With DS4 finishing this week and cohort 5 starting in less than two weeks, I thought it would be useful to see what it took for DS5 to get into The Data School. As part of the application process, we require people to submit something in Tableau Public. This can be with any data set they want. The point is that it proves a great filter for passion, which is ultimately what we’re hiring for. If you send us a CV, we’ll send it right back and tell you to create something in Tableau.

It’s fun for me to see what people create. I personally review every application and provide feedback when I can. Keeping in mind that they are just starting to learn Tableau, I don’t pay a ton of attention to best practices; usually the application gives me a good enough idea for whether they “get” Tableau or not. Yet still, how they heck can they create something so good so soon? I’m amazed!

Below you’ll see their initial applications. Click on any image to view it on Tableau Public. Given where they’re starting from, I can’t wait to see how much they kick on after 4 months of training.
