DS27 Training Blog- Week 10

by Henry Coley-Fisher

This week DS27 got hands on with SQL and Snowflake, took a closer look at API’s, and worked on an interesting project with a client in the pharmaceutical services industry.

Monday: we spent the morning delving deeper into table calculations in Tableau with Carl. This was a really interesting and useful session where each member of the team picked a table calculation spent time understanding it and then came up with use cases to teach rest of the cohort. In the afternoon the team had our project kick off call with the client for this week – a pharmaceutical services company who were looking to transition their quality control departments to using Tableau.

Tuesday: today we were introduced to Snowflake and SQL in preparation for our project next week. We spent the entire day with Nick learning the basics of SQL syntax and practiced writing statements to work with databases in our snowflake instance.

Wednesday: today we had all day allocated for our project work. The team had an area of quality control within the business to work on. We used most of the day to investigate and prepare the data in Alteryx getting ready to create some insightful dashboards in Tableau.

Thursday: we had project time in up until 3pm today. The team finalized the dashboards and had a run-through of the presentation with members of the core team for feedback. At 3pm we had a great session on API’s using Alteryx and postman with Ann Jackson (the Head Coach of the new DS New York).

Friday: the team prepared for our presentation with our client. Matty was our PM for this week and he did a fantastic job of organizing the team and delivering our project. Our goal was to show the benefits of visualizing and reporting data using Tableau to a department who were at the start of their journey with the software and I think the team did a great job delivering that.
