Dashboard Week - Day 5 - Boy Bands

by Marcelo Ramos

Welcome to the final installment of DS32's Dashboard Week. In true star like fashion, our final task was to produce a dashboard on Boy Bands in the US Billboards top 100 from https://github.com/the-pudding/data/tree/master/boybands.

It consisted of two CSVs, one for the bands and one for the boys. Joining them was easy however downloading them was somewhat difficult. To download it (which took me too long to figure out) I had to view the files in their raw format, and then click CTRL-S and save the file as CSV.

Once they were joined, I started building an idea. It was mainly inspired by the boyband database on pudding.cool (https://pudding.cool/2018/11/boy-bands/). I wanted to try and recreate it, but in a much simpler, tableau-esque way.

To recreate the little boy band members, I had to think how I would make them with their characteristics. In the end, I only used 4 characteristics which were fields (skin, hair color, shirt color and jeans color) so that I could test it and get it finished in time. The idea was to only ever have one date filtered at one time to show a single band, and have that filter affect shapes which I got from flaticon.com. The "Name" field of the boy band members are on detail to split the view into the number of band members. The respective item field like shirt color would be on color and I would ensure the colors match with the names.

When the filter was added back on, I can then place all these shape sheets on the dashboard as floating objects and align them together to make people. There are still some quirks where things don't work when resized. Here's the link to the dashboard:
