DS27 Training Blog - Week 5

by Marius Nikiforovas

After a week of improving our Tableau skills and discovering the broader variety of services Tableau offer, this week we dived deep into the new concepts and met the future stars of the Data School.

Monday: The topic of the day was Regex, also known as regular expressions. Ollie gave us an introductory talk, taught the fundamentals and gave us a few challenges to have a go at. We were mainly using regex101 to test the logic and Alteryx to put it into practice.

Tuesday: We have spent the day with Carl, brushing up our Tableau Prep skills. We covered data scaffolding, new rows tool and did a few data prep challenges. Ooh, if we would only know that this was waiting for us on Friday...

Wednesday: DS 28 were having their interviews in the office, so we had a chance to chat with them and meet the future talents of the Data School. It was great fun and a nice break from prepping our Learn What Data School Learns (LWDSL) presentations that are scheduled for late November.

Thursday: it was the first day the whole of our cohort worked from home. The focus of the day was parameters and date fields. We took a deep dive into how parameters could help you improve dashboard interactivity and flexibility, which in part encouraged me to write a blog on one of the cool use cases of parameters. We also gained a much more thorough understanding of the differences between discrete and continuous date fields and when to use them.

Friday: this weeks project took us by surprise because none of us was expecting it to be on Tableau Prep. We all felt more comfortable with Alteryx, so it is fair to say that most of us found this week's project to be challenging, yet, it was a good practice of using the tool itself and by the end, we agreed that we need to better our knowledge of the tool.

Another busy, yet productive week! Keep an eye for Week 6 and check out our previous weeks' blogs:
