DS27 Training Blog - Week 6

by Marius Nikiforovas

After the last week, learning Regex and Data Scaffolding, this week DS27 coaching was much more focused on projects and managing client expectations, which makes sense considering we are about to begin our client projects next week.

Monday: a fun day spent learning Alteryx Apps and reinstating our knowledge of iterative Macros. During this day, we created a Pet Finder App, that allows you to find the closest animal shelter, Ollie showed us how to create a chained App and in the end, we tried to solve the Alteryx Challenge #12 with a help of an iterative macro.

Tuesday: we spent the morning with Robin learning how to manage client expectations and what kind of questions to ask when we start a project. The other half of the day we spent working on Learn What Data School Learns (LWDSL) presentations and got some useful tips from Sophie on how to ace these.

Wednesday: a day with Louisa talking about Data Security & Ethics. We have discussed the biggest data breaches in history, talked about how to avoid these and also considered different approaches one could take given an unethical situation.

Thursday: the focus of the first half of the day was effective dashboard design. Ellen gave a presentation on how to design business dashboards, shared some generic design tips and gave us a dashboard to redo, a great way to put what we have learned into practice. After lunch, we continued with Carl, but this time we spoke about effective project management. We also had some data schoolers join in to share their experience and provide us with some useful hints for our projects.

Friday: this week's challenge was creating an Alteryx App that allowed a user to pick a file, choose the year, student type and multiple scholarship criteria. We also needed to output it as a table using reporting tools. Considering that Monday was the first time we actually worked on Apps, this was great practice and means of consolidating our learning. We finished the day by giving our workflow walk-throughs and watching DS25 present their last client project.

Just like that, our last week focused entirely on learning is done. It flew by so quick and DS27 still can't believe that next week we start working on client projects. Wish us luck and see you next week!
