Visualizing the Olympics Games

by Niccolo Cirone

The second entry for the Data School’s #DashboardWeek is about visualizing the Olympics Games from a dataset that includes all the medals given out from 1972 to 2014!

I built an interactive and exploratory dashboard that allows the user to select a specific game between 1972 and 2014, pick a Country, and appreciate both how that Country went in that game and how that country performed in all the games on an area chart.

The Country can be selected from a map showcasing the total number of medals gained by each country for the selected game through different shades of blue.

In order to show how many medals the selected country brought home, I used reversed lollipops replicating the shapes and colors of the medals.

I sorted them by the actual order of the Olympic podium, which I also included as a reference image, just below the “medals”.

As for the area chart, the user can filter it to look at the Country’s performance at Summer games, Winter games, or both.

Clicking on the image below you will go to my dashboard: it would be amazing to receive feed-backs from you, reader!
