Bench times two

by Ozlem Sigbeku

I owe you a 'hello' and a hearty explanation dear reader. So, before you rip me to shred in unbridled frustration for my absence, let me avail your anger. Since my last entry into the blogosphere, I was on 'Bench' for a months, on a placement with Paramount Global, went to B2S and now find my posterior firmly planted on bench once more.

Now that I am on Bench, what am I even doing?

My first week started slowly with a bank holiday and a call from Steph and Erica. I made a Makeover Monday dashboard and I attempted and failed a Workout Wednesday. Last week I was on a week project working on bringing Asana data into Tableau and making a couple dashboards. This week I was at an event trouble-shooting tableau issues.

Other than that, how have I been doing with the tasks I set myself last Bench:

  • Workout Wednesdays: been attending when I have been free and am leading a session at TIL next week.
  • Makeover Mondays: done one week so far but have drafted another. I will hope to ramp these up as I get more used to doing them
  • Alteryx Challenges: haven't done any since I got on my second bench so will slot of some time during the week to do one or two every week.
  • Frosty Fridays: didn't even manage to do these last bench, so again, will slot out some time on Fridays most likely.
  • Updating my Tableau Resume: so far I have done minmal work on this, but I will refactor it and update the data too.
  • Making my own Git repository: made it, and put a few python projects in there too. Currently working on a Conway's game of life script.
  • Making my own website for my work: no shut luck and no plans for now.
  • Alteryx - Advanced certification: did it! Got my advanced in my first Bench. I may look to doing my Expert now.
  • Statistical analysis: I will make some plans to go through some of my old work on this but this is on hold for now.
  • Python: see my github!
  • SQL: I will have to think of the best way to learn this. Most probably find an easy beginner project and go from there.
  • Short-term projects and Seeing is Believing projects: done about two of these so far. Would love to get stuck into another.
  • Helping with application windows: currently giving feedback to an applicant.
  • Volunteering for recruitment events: presented ta two "meet'n'greet" events and attended almost 5 to help out.
  • Coffee catch-ups: I haven't signed up yet but I have been talking to a lot of people around the office.
  • Networking and getting involved in TIL/data-related events: I have been to a Women in Data event at the TIL offices and it was great fun. I will try to go to at least one TUG. I want to know what all the fuss it about!

11 out of 16 goals either completed or in progress is pretty good if you ask me. Check back at the end of my second bench!
