Dashboard Week - Day 3: 2016 EU Referendum

by Suchira Peiris

Today was a design focused dashboard. Given my lacklustre designs previously I opted to focus more on the design elements than insights.

The biggest challenge was we only had 2.5 hours from start to finish.

The task was to create a infographic or KPI dashboard based on the EU Brexit Referendum

The requirements were to create a sketch and present that alongside the visualisation

The initial question I asked was what impact did postal votes play in this referendum, given the high turnout and publicity. Also I would be interested in seeing how it has since changed due to the global event.

If I had more time I would have explored turning the data into a hexbin, tried out some waterfall charts and added some additional data expanding outside of London.

Attached below are my sketch and dashboard

I opted to go for a more infographic style and thus tried to just tackle a few major points, avoid tooltips and keep it as simple and clear as possible. The answer to my first question was around 20% of valid votes were postal which surprised me as I would have thought with the amount of publicity and awareness more people would apply to get postal ballots early. Nonetheless 20% is still a substantial amount. I expect due to global events it will increase in the future.

A quick note on my sketch as you can see I originally planned to have the map on the right as more of a selector, however I thought giving it a more prominent place would visually clarify that this is focused on London and the remaining information is split into general votes and a postal drilldown.

In conclusion, I am happy with the result. It is probably the best designed dashboard for this week and I am pleased it conveys the message with a limited amount of interactivity.
