Going into my first week at The Data School, I wasn’t really nervous, just curious and ready to see what it would be like. I didn’t have a clear idea of what to expect, but I was looking forward to learning something completely new and meeting the people I’d be spending the next few months with.
What I Learned
This week focused on the foundations of data, like data structures, granularity, and using Tableau Prep. We learned how data is stored and why understanding structure and level of detail is so important for analysis. Tableau Prep was definitely a challenge at first, especially planning and thinking through each step before building. Coming from a law background, I’m used to a different way of working, so learning technical tools has been a big shift. It’s taken some time to adjust, but I’m starting to see how planning makes everything smoother.
What Surprised Me
What surprised me most was how positive and supportive the environment is. I’d heard before joining that everyone here is friendly, but you only really understand it once you’re here. It’s clear that this culture runs throughout the whole company, from the core team and coaches to the consultants and different cohorts. The buddy system really helps strengthen those connections too, creating links between people from different groups.
It’s also been great getting to know my cohort. Even though it’s only been a week, we already get along and work well together, which makes learning so much easier and more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts
My biggest takeaway from week one is to ask questions, then ask a few more. It’s okay not to know everything straight away, and support is always there when you need it. Planning is also key, taking time to map things out before you start really helps. Most importantly, I’ve learned to embrace the discomfort that comes with learning something new because that’s where growth happens.
If this week is anything to go by, the journey ahead will be both challenging and rewarding, and I’m excited for what’s next.
