How to fill empty cells in Power BI

This week we are working with Power BI and came across a problem with empty cells of a column in a dataset.

How can we solve this?

The first thing to notice is that the empty cell of Order ID have the same Order Date and also belongs to the same Customer ID as the previous non-empty cell. The only different thing between the non-empty and the empty one is the Product ID.

We need to fill the empty one with the same Order ID as the non-empty one above it. There is a Fill Down function in Power BI that allows us to simply fill empty cells downward.

But Fill Down is designed to replace null values, but not empty strings. In this case, the empty cells contain empty strings so we need to take a couple of extra steps.

Here is how we can solve it step-by-step.

Step 1: Go to Transform then look for Replace Values.

Step 2: After Replace Values window showed up, make sure to leave the field Value To Find empty and fill the field Replace With with null then press OK.

Step 3: The empty cells are now filled with nulls. Find the option Fill and hover over the small arrow next to it. Press Down.

Step 4: The cells should be filled with the same Order ID as the one above it.

I hope it help! :)
