First steps in the DS Germany!

by Ben Mangel

Hello and welcome to my first blog ever! I've never done this before, so let's see where we end up. The goal of these blogs is to help us, the data schoolers, to reflect what we experienced and learned in the Data School. And I experienced a very warm welcome, a fantastic group of co data schoolers and I've learned something about data preparation with Alteryx. So I take you with me on my journey through the first days in the Data School Germany. Buckle up, here we go!

My first day started with a little mess up in my head and with Google Maps. I looked the location of the office up on monday (we started on tuesday, not like the other DS  because of a bank holiday) and was pretty confident I will find the way to the office the next morning again easily. But then, the next morning I was a little bit lost with my bike in the city centre of Hamburg, Maps navigation saved me and I made it sweatier and more stressed to the office than I planned to be. But no worries! I ran directly into Dirk and Martin in front of the building who were waiting for us there and it was really nice to meet both in person after the whole remote application process. And then I met my cohort - the six people i will be spending a lot of time with over the next 4 months. A bunch of really cool and interesting people with so different backgrounds and personalities that I am sure we've gonna have a really good time together!

The vibe was instantly very good, there was no awkward silence - the opposite we laughed a lot. After getting to know each other a little, we got a presentation by Martin about how we are gonna spend the next 4 months and a presentation by Dirk about The Information Lab itself with some financials and strategy of The Information Lab Germany. This was really interesting to get an overview about the company we are now working for. After lunch we had to do some administrative stuff, like setting up accounts and passwords for all the tools and platforms we are gonne use at TIL. Niclas, the IT administrator, some people in the office call him GOD! (yes, in capslock and with exclamation point!) was really patient with us - so now we have a fully set up laptop and can start in our training. At this point I would like to mention, that you are very well equipped when you start in Data School, which I really appreciated!

At the same day Nhung and Tanya from the DSDE 2, who just finished their training, gave us a presentation on: "How to make the best out of the Data School", which was really cool and helpful! They gave us informations about the structure of the DS aswell as some more informal things and the most important thing: Don't stress yourself too much!

At our second day Luke and Joe from the UK team visited the office in Hamburg. The've been to a workshop in Münster, actually at the university where I graduated, to present Tableau to students. So after work we went all together to a bar, got some beer and had some really cool and interesting conversations. I felt very welcome in this new environment and was very happy after this evening, which I did not expect to last so long.

Ok, this got longer than I expected - so I use this as a cliffhanger for my learnings in Alteryx which i will describe in a further Blog - so stay tuned! (I've seen this kind of wording in other blogs, somewhere in the internet, so I copy it :D)
