Joss Lazenby

Joss comes from a background in the life sciences, attaining First Class honours in Microbiology from the University of Glasgow. This was followed by doctoral research at the University of Reading in collaboration with a start-up. His project tackled antimicrobial resistance in bacteria of animal origin, and utilised the gene editing tool CRISPR-Cas. His first experience with large datasets involved analysing the genomes of over 10,000 E. coli for antibiotic resistance genes. This necessitated creating and running the data through a bioinformatic pipeline, as well as cleaning and analysing outputs using R.

Throughout his doctoral studies Joss gained a passion for the visualisation and communication of data. He delivered presentations of his research to many different audiences, including lectures to the general public, local interest groups, as well as presentations at national and international scientific conferences.

Joss decided to follow his passion for analytics beyond the petri dish and into the world of data, experimenting with Tableau for the first time as a part of his application to the Data School. Now a part of DS53, he is excited to expand his ability to glean insights, generate impact and weave narrative through data.

Outside of work, Joss is a passionate supporter of his local football team Reading FC as well as an avid F1 fan.
