Welcome to the data school: week 1

by Bridget Ama Boateng

Day 1- Welcome the data school! friendly faces, warm welcomes and meeting my cohort.

The first day consisted of meeting other data schoolers and coaches, downloading all the software we need for the next couple of months so Alteryx and Tableau Prep. We also got introduced to convo a platform used to connect with everyone in the data school to ask questions, make sure you use it!

Day 2- Alteryx Fundamentals. Learnt how to use the basics of Alteryx so inputting data using drag and drop, learning how to use a wildcard, navigating around the results pane, outputting and splitting data.

Note: Don't forget to 'Run' your data to get your output in the results pane (Ctrl+R).

Day 3- More Alteryx. We look at more tools such as browse which gives you all the information about the data school, how to blend the data by using join which puts data sets together, find and replace and union which appending which specifies data.

Day 4- An introduction to Tableau Prep. My laptop broke down in the morning but I posted my about it on convo and got responses straight away! Learnt the basics of using tableau prep which is very similar to Alteryx, started doing the challenges which were a little bit challenging but helped me get used to navigating around tableau and actually understanding what to do.

Day 5- Project and Presentation Day. As soon as it hit 9am, our project was posted onto our group chat on convo and the clock began ticking. My presentation was on Pivoting data in tableau prep. It was a slow start for me but managed to pick up the pace using YouTube videos from 'Tableau Tim' and 'The information Lab' which was very useful. By 12pm our group had a quick discussion about our presentation order and helped each other fill in any gaps. 1:30pm came around super quickly and here I was presenting to my cohort on a new skill I had learnt a few days ago, Lorna provided us with feedback straight away and the main thing I needed to improve on was, ensuring that my demo on how to use a tool on tableau runs smoother.

After our presentations, we watched DS31 present their project to the other cohorts. It was a very insightful project and took down some notes on how each member was presenting so I could take that on board and apply to my own next week Friday.

At 4pm, I collected my fixed laptop and began typing up this blog.

5:30pm, It was home time.

Looking forward to next week and learning more!
