Week 4 Friday Project: PowerBI

It is the end of week 4 at The Data School, and with Friday comes another project! For context, at the end of each week we are given a brief at 9:00 which we then work on until we present it after lunch at 13:00! Below is my final outcome as well as a reflective log.

Week 4 Project Log - Hotel Dataset

OVERVIEW

Stakeholder(s)

@Robbin Vernooij (TIL UK) 🔧

Background:

The Sales & Marketing Executive is diving into this data on their new hotel acquisitions for the first time. The hotels are all quite similarly structured so it would be good to get a better understanding of how they could be segmented to build out three completely different brands. Some of the departments could be shrunk, grown or even removed depending on what markets they might want to target which each hotel brand. Getting an idea of who is spending what, where and how much will help to lead these further conversations.

Objectives:

  • Create a final dashboard sketch
  • Connect to the relevant data & build the dashboard in Power BI

Deliverables:

  • Sketch
  • PowerBI dashboard

Data:

2 csv files: reservations and transactions

OUTCOMES

Work done:

  • Gathered an understanding of the dataset, user stories, and previous dashboard sketch using documentation from the previous consultant
  • Created a final sketch of the dashboard, making small changes to the previous suggestion
  • Created a new column to determine the guest type staying at the hotels
  • Created a 4 dashboard views in PowerBI (only overview and one specific hotel view polished)

Software Used:

Excalidraw, PowerBI

Impact:

The dahsboards will help the client:

  • Compare which hotel generates the most revenue
  • Compare guest spending in different departments in each hotel
  • Compare the type of guest staying at each hotel
  • Which booking channel people book through
  • How much people spend depending on how many days in advance they book through

Client feedback:

  • Abbreviations of KPIs were a bit confusing - more clear to have full number than abbreviation
  • In presentation don’t have so much text

Next steps:

  • Add more filters
  • Add highlight colours if a category is above the average
  • Create the dashboards for the other hotels
  • Add bookmarks?

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS

Skills gained:

Using PowerBI:

  • to create different charts
  • Using interactivity to generate insights

Lessons Learned:

  • Similar to last week, scope to do less!
  • Abbreviations aren’t always great
  • When talking about a dashboard, follow a narrative - lead the viewer how they might use it to find insights
  • Actually stick to the plan!

Challenges:

  • Scope and time management!!
  • Presentation - leave more time to practice and actually stand up and practice!
