Tableau Server 101

by Gerda Staurylaite

Continuing with week 4 of training, we were introduced to Tableau Server and the inner workers of it all.

TIL Server has different sites which were created with different projects and different permissions. In each site, we can edit quite a lot of things. We were introduced to different parts of any particular site and how to manage it. We will look into some of the 'settings' to the Server.

Some Settings in the Server

In this part, if you are an administrator, you can add users to the site that you want to give permission to view the site and the projects in it. We would have to go into the Users tab and add a new user.

In the Groups tab, you can create groups of people that the same permissions would apply to. This would reduce the amount of times an administrator would change the permissions to each individual and save some time.

In the Schedules tab, you can create a schedule of how often you want a certain action to occur throughout a chosen time period. For example, if you want to refresh the extract of a data set every day at a certain time, you can set a schedule to do exactly that and it will refresh it at your chosen time.

In the Jobs tab, you are able to see what kind of actions were executed, whether it was a refresh or a flow. Here you will also be able to see if there were any errors in executing those actions.

In the Tasks tab, we can see what kind of actions are set to happen and when. This can range from extract refreshes to flows to even some alerts (where you want to be notified when a refresh happens or just in general).

In the Site Status tab, you can check the analysis of what was done in the site, when and by who. This is useful if you want to track what a certain person or group has done.

And last but not least, in the Settings tab, if it is your own site, you can set up different parts to the site and how it works. BUT! As we have learned, if it is not our site, it is better to not touch them at all! :)
