Tips and Shortcuts: Adding a Ranking and Totals within Tableau

by Irene Diomi

I am always astonished by number of tricks and shortcuts you can find within Tableau. Today, I will go through some of the tricks I learned this week. First, we will have a look at how to add Ranking, then how to add Totals to your table.

How to add a Ranking  ?

As you can see in the picture below,  each States has been ranked from 1 to 10 based on their values.

To create the ranking, we will add a field before our States' field.

We took our Value field and made it a discrete measure (blue field).

We then use a Quick Table calculation to turn our values into Rank.

And voila ! We have a nice ranking for our States.

How to add Totals quickly in Tableau?

We have a Table, we want to know the Totals for each different categories. There is a quick way to do it without the need for calculation.

If you click on Analytics, you will a section named Totals.

You can then select it and drag it into your view and  choose to show Column Grand Totals or Row Grand Totals.

The results will look like this:

With 2 clicks, we were able to get our Grand Totals.

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post, I hope it was useful and if you need help with this tutorial feel free to contact me.
