Dashboard Week Day 3: Lessons Learned

Today’s Dashboard Week task was to analyse blog data. We connected to Google Analytics and joined to a dataset containing details about the authors in question.

I learned a few more things today.

  1. I didn’t try to build the trickiest bit of functionality until the end of the day. In hindsight, this was a mistake. Do the difficult bits while you still have the energy to complete them.
  2. Sometimes, when you think a tool in Alteryx could have been built in a better way, or could have been set up to give the user more options, check the Alteryx Gallery. Today it had a much better version of the Google Analytics input tool then my version of Alteryx did.
  3. Once you’ve got a decent viz idea, stick with it, especially if you have a short deadline to produce the work. It’s a good idea to redraft, but you don’t have to discard all your previous insights.
