Using the Keyboard to Navigate Menus in Tableau

Here’s a really quick tip for using your keyboard to make things a bit faster in Tableau. Keyboard shortcuts tend to work in a really intuitive way: hold the Alt key, then press the first letter of whatever menu you’re trying to open. For example, if you want to look at the file menu, click Alt+F. If you want the Analysis menu, click Alt + A.

The dashboard shortcuts continue into the menus themselves. Having opened the Analysis window with Alt + A, you’ll notice that there’s an option to create a calculated field. Press C to do so (that’s Alt + A + C).

Many other keyboard shortcuts work in exactly this way. It won’t work every time, as some menus start with the same first letter (Alt + D brings up the Data menu rather than the Dashboard menu, for instance), but it’s a great way of selecting a lot of options more quickly.
