What to expect in your first day at the data school

by Joel Akaje-Macauley

Turns out technology is actually very hard to use. I personally spent 20 minutes trying to get past a problem; I tried turning it off and on again to no avail and so just get a new laptop to be told that I’m going to have to do this again in a few weeks. After this our coach Robbin then explained many things summarised below.

Introductory takeaways:

• This is going to be a friendly environment where any questions can be asked to anyone
• Don’t use copyrighted images in the blogs
• There is a large bank of information available to anyone within TIL through the google drive.

Later we toured the premises and probably the most impactful part of the day was the talk with Ed and Lieu who are currently on placements and have gone through the data school.

Their advice:

  1. For anything ever look to convo first!
    a. Any problems you have had people have had it before.
    b. When broaching a question have done your own research and present the problem alongside the research that you have done.
    c. Even while benched ask if anyone has any problems where you can support to not let yourself become idle.
  2. Don’t stress!
    a. When it comes to qualifications they can be repeated and financed therefore don’t worry about failure.
  3. Get stuck in!
    a. Even if you do not know if you are ready enter a competition and if you don’t win at least, you have learnt something.
    b. The best way to learn is to try a challenge and work it out as you go.
    c. Learn on the job when it comes to non-taught material such as AWS or more advanced SQL.
  4. Create good habits.
    a. Every Friday morning publish timesheets
    b. 30 minutes at the end of the day write a summary of work for the blog
    i. This will later be referred back to helping you understand techniques you may forget.
ii. This also recaps the work done to prepare you for the next day.

Personal takeaways: When I look into how ALTRYX work I will see how fast I can progress through all of the challenges and see if I could work through all of them faster than Lieu whilst balancing my own life.
