Having just passed the alteryx advance exam, here are some tips!
1) Prepare some text inputs.
A lot of the multiple choice questions can be easy to check with some data. Not having to write new inputs will get you to save tremendous amount of time. I would recommend having multiple inputs including, string, dates, numerical values and especially spatial (enough points to make a polygon and find its centroid at least).
2) Recreate the multiple choice questions scenarios.
Especially when it comes to any string function! It is the beauty of the certification, your ability to use the tool quickly can make the difference in your end score. Recreating the scenario and applying the different answers given to you to verify which is true is the single best way to make sure you are not making any silly mistakes. This will not be possible for every questions but in my certification I was able to use it for at least 10 questions.
3) Remember it is open book.
This accounts for both practical and multiple choice questions. You have access to the beauties of the internet. Use google. Use Chat GPT. In my case I used google a lot for multiple choice questions, just like during the core certification, however, this time I also used it for one of my practical questions. Being able to know how to fill down quickly was extremely useful to me and it all came from using the power tool that is google.
4) Relax
It's a tough certification to get, just take it easy. There is no pressure, if you fail you will have learned so much just by trying the questions! The worst that can happen is you having to retake the exam next week.
5) Revise the content
There's a lot to cover but it all can come up and every point matters so revise all the tools mentioned in the material. I'd make a special mention for analytical apps and macros as the questions can feel trickier than other tools. Spatial tools were also very important. Revising also helps you know where to look when using google or alteryx to verify any answers.
6) Do the practice questions
There will definitely be very similar to the ones in the test. Make the most of what is given to you!
7) Do some alteryx challenges ( especially with apps)
To prepare for the practical questions! I found that while the data was different from the alteryx challenges, the logic behind those questions remains similar to the ones you use to solve challenges. So try and get a couple challenges with macros, apps, spatial tags from the index in order to practice those skills and possibly make your life much easier on the day of the certification.
8) Remember spatial data does not always mean spatial tool.
This might save you time I lost during the test. The summarise tool is very useful for certain spatial questions.
I hope this helps! I recommend reading how other members of the alteryx community feel about the certification, combining everyone's tips can only make you more likely to succeed. Good luck!
