The journey to The Data School

by Longyan Chen

One day, I received an email from an agent from GRB (Graduate Recruitment Bureau) and I was told there was an opportunity that I might be interested in. Then, I looked through the job description, I felt like I must seize this opportunity. This is how I started my journey to The Data School.

As you look at this blog, I assume that you either try to apply for the job or you have already started to prepare for your application. When I started to design my dashboard for the first round interview, I went to check https://www.thedataschool.co.uk/successful/ to see what the successful applicants have done to get into The Data School.

This website is really useful and I got a lot of inspiring ideas. I even downloaded some of their work into my Tableau Public to see how they made them. I also reached out to some of the authors and asked them questions about their dashboard and Tableau tips. Moreover, I presented my dashboard to one of them and asked for feedback. They are super friendly and patient.

I also made use of The Data School blogs and Youtube - I read many blogs from the company's website and I was so motivated by data schoolers' stories especially how they made it through The Data School. At the same time, I followed Andy's channel and The information Lab on Youtube, hence most of my Tableau skills were gained from those blogs and videos. Actually the videos I enjoyed the most were Meet the team. They talked about how current data schoolers got in and what their working life were like. It gave me insight into the company and working environment and moreover, it helped me with my two interviews. Because eventually you will be interviewed by some of the coaches and you would feel like you knew them already, thus you would feel more relaxed during your interview.

Hopefully my blog can bring some helpful information to you during the process of application. For myself, I enjoyed the whole process, because I saw myself improving every day and I achieved the goal that I thought I would not make it. So just go for it and good luck!!!
