After Work at TIL

There's always something happening at Watling Street!

Data + Women

Tuesday saw the London chapter of Data + Women meeting at TIL.

Kerine Taylor from Biztory taught us all about Epilepsy: thank you Kerine for such an insightful session - I definitely learnt a lot of things I didn't know! This was the first time seeing someone present a Tableau viz since starting and refocused me on what we're all here for. I will definitely be trying to integrate some gifs into my presentations in the future.

Next, Libby Hickey from John Lewis spoke to us about her journey as a woman in data. It was reassuring to learn that even someone as successful as Libby can still suffer from imposter syndrome as I'm sure many others have felt before. Needless to say, Libby's talk was super inspiring!

Last up was Zoe and Trea from DS38 showing us some new functionality in Alteryx. While I had no idea what they were talking about (we'll learn about that next week), I was so impressed with their presentation. Its crazy to think in 4 months it could be some DS40ers presenting to an event like this.

DS38 Graduation

Friday saw DS38 graduate after finishing their 4 months of intensive learning at the Data School before they start their placements. The theme was disco and the shiny shirts were out in force. This was my first chance to chat to some of the other cohorts in a social environment and I for one had a blast. I even had my first attempt at table tennis - I won't be going pro any time soon.

Pod Social

The Information Lab creates social "pods" which have members of different Data School cohorts and members of the other teams at TIL. My second Monday at the company was the date of my first pod social. The wonderful Ozlem organized for us to go virtual pigeon shooting. I wasn't expecting to be very good but after a few shots I'd started to get the hang of it. Some of my pod were a little too good so I'll make sure to stay on their good side.
