As I complete my fourth day at the Data School, I reflect back on myself a month ago; elated to have been offered my first ever big girl job and curious (maybe a little nervous too) about my up and coming first day. So if you are in that position too, listen up, this one's for you!
Honestly, the day itself was very easy going, a lot of introductions, a tour, set up of tec etc - nothing too overwhelming, which I appreciated a lot. Although I didn't learn any technical skills as such, I definitely learned a lot which reassured me in my role moving forwards...
You are not alone! I knew going in that I would have a good support system around me. I mean, there are literally 7 others going through the exact same thing at the exact same time, but this support branched out much further than just that. I was surprised about how approachable everyone was - other DS's, coaches, even Big Boss Tom. You are also assigned a buddy, a volunteer from a previous cohort who will support you throughout your time here, and placed in a Pod with a mixture of people from all previous cohorts to engage in various social events.
You are good enough! Being fully immersed in the data world for the first time, I definitely felt a strong sense of impostor syndrome, especially coming from a Psychology background and being surrounded by such talent. There were people in my cohort with math's degrees, even previous experience in Tableau already so it was easy to fall into the cycle of self-doubt. What's important to remember is that there is a reason that you're there. You have displayed the skills to prove that you have what it takes to be here so have faith in yourself, and have faith in the coaches that chose you.
Embrace it! After speaking to previous DS's, there was one common piece of advice that kept coming up. Although it seems like a long time, the 4 months goes by so quickly so embrace it and make the most of your time there. Step out of your comfort zone and go to the events and talks that you are interested in, connect with as many people as you can, your future self will thank you!
So with everything said - well done and good luck! I look forward to seeing you here very soon! If you have any further questions do feel free to reach out - nadia.holloway@theinformationlab.co.uk.
