Day 5 at the Data School: A Presentation on Aggregation

Today at 1pm DS40 are doing our first presentations on what we have learnt this week. In my pair we are presenting on using aggregation steps in tableau prep.

Aggregation functions perform a calculation on a set of values and return a single value. To aid our presentation we wanted to an example of this in practice

To start we used Chat GPT to create a data set on potatoes to perform an aggregation on.

Other that French fries not scoring the 5/5 spot and crisps being called potato chips it was perfect!

In our end result we wanted to produce a table that just contained the potato types and an average rating score for them

To do this we imputed our data into tableau prep and added an aggregation step, from the field we want to see in our output go in the fields below so put the potato types under the grouped fields and the taste rating under the aggregated field section making sure that it is a Avg. not a Sum and we are done!

The Aggregation tool in Tableau Prep is great for understanding what you've aggregated and it allows you to aggregate data at a more detailed level before loading it into Tableau Desktop.
