Dashboard Week Day 1: Scraping the Backpacker Index for 2025

The point of Dashboard Week is to get them working very, very quickly through a brand new data set each day. Some days require data prep, some don’t. Some days have complex data, some don’t. It’s a total surprise each morning.

The rules for dashboard week are pretty simple and apply to every day this week:

  1. They must work independently, unless otherwise specified.
  2. If data prep is required, they can use Alteryx, Prep, SQL or Power Query, unless otherwise specified.
  3. They must create a sketch of their plan for their dashboard and show this during their presentation.
  4. The dashboard they create must be uploaded to Tableau Public or Power BI Service (and embed it into their blog). If no visualisation tool is specified in the challenge, they can choose themselves.
  5. They must write a blog post detailing their work throughout the day.
  6. At 3:30 pm, they will present their data prep, sketch, viz, and anything else they would like to present.

The Task Today for DS52

Scrape travel cost data from the Backpacker Index site to help travellers find the best-value destinations. You’ll collect both summary and detailed information from each city’s page and build a dashboard to support planning an unforgettable budget-friendly adventure.
