Dashboard Week Day 3: Video Game Economy

We probably all have a basic understanding of how a general economy works when buying and selling items. These ‘items’ have a perceived value and we can decide to buy and sell those. What do we use to buy them with? A form of currency or items that have value to the owners.

Enter the world of one of my favourite video games of all time; Path of Exile.

This game has a unique economy and a very active player base, parts of which track the economy trends.

So for today I would like you to design and build a dashboard that allows you to dive into a slice of the Path of Exile economy!

You can find the data dumps here, for a bunch of Path of Exile leagues.

Focus only on data dumps WITHOUT Ruthless in the name, and within each zip file, focus only on 2 files with the following naming convention:

name_of_zipfile.items.csv & name_of_zipfile.currency.csv (or one of these depending on your scope)

Think of a league as a fresh economy, they start on a given day, where a world opens and no items or currency exist until players find them.

Players start trading and over time different items or currency gain different values depending on the time of the league (seasonality), people’s opinions (perceived values update based on findings, popularity or even speculations), and any other impacts you see in real life.

Take inspiration from the source of the data, poe.ninja, have a look at currency exchange dashboards, item value trackers or go ahead and find your own insights!

Tool(s) of choice are yours to pick, the outputs remain the same; blog & published dashboard/report (if report, embedded in the blog).

Looking forward to seeing your presentations at 3:30pm!
