Dashboard Week Day 3

Exploring Path of Exile’s In-Game Economy

Challenge of the Day:
For Day 3 of Dashboard Week, we had to build a dashboard using data from Path of Exile, a popular action RPG, to analyze item prices and currency fluctuations. As someone who isn’t familiar with the game (or even video games in general), my first step was to dive into some research about Path of Exile and its unique in-game economy.

Understanding the Context

In Path of Exile, items are traded using different in-game currencies, and their value depends on how much players want or don’t want them. My idea for the dashboard was to focus in on one item, oil.

I focused on three main parts:

  1. The average price of oil over time in the game
  2. Average price of a single oil against all oils.
  3. The price volatility of different oils

Here was my sketch

Here was my final dashboard

I think my lack of knowledge of the game's economy and the absence of a plan really hurt me, and left me very little time to format my dashboard, one to go back to for sure!
