For Dashboard Week day 3&4, DS51 will be exploring the Gender Pay Gap across London and the UK, using data from the UK government and Greater London Authority.
For the next two days, DS51 will step into the role of Business Intelligence Analysts for a newly formed UK government team - the Gender Pay Gap (GPG) taskforce. Their challenge: to shine a light on the scale of the gender pay gap across the UK, uncover key trends, and hold employers accountable by identifying those falling behind in achieving pay equity.
The Brief
The group has 4 datasets they can use to explore the Gender Pay Gap. The following datasets come from data.london.gov.uk - these are the key datasets that DS51 can use to explore the Gender Pay Gap:
- Gender Pay Gap for London & the UK
- Gender Pay Gaps for London Employers (2023-24)
- Gender Pay Gaps for Employers in the UK (2023-24)
The last dataset comes from ons.gov.uk and provides the SIC codes for different industries, which may be useful in categorising Employers within their retrospective industries:
Using data provided, DS51 will need to clean these datasets, combining where appropriate, using Alteryx. They will then need to bring the data into Tableau, creating some bespoke dashboards that explore some of the following business questions (this is just a guide - the GPG taskforce are happy for the team to explore other avenues of interest that may arise!):
- How does the gender pay gap vary between London and the rest of the UK?
- Is London better or worse than the national average? Are there significant differences?
- Which industries have the highest and lowest gender pay gaps?
- Are there industries where the gap is reversed?
- Which employers report the largest gender pay gaps? Which are leading the way to equality?
- Does company size affect the gender pay gap?
- How does the proportion of men/women in different pay quartiles vary by employer? Are women concentrated in lower pay quartiles?
- Which organisations show the most balanced pay quartile distribution?
- How does the gender bonus gap compare to the gender pay gap?
The GPG team are new to Tableau and excited to see what it can do. Inspired by the amazing dashboards they've seen on Tableau Public, they’re expecting visually compelling designs, sharp analysis, and clear, actionable insights that can directly inform their reporting and recommendations to government.
DS51 will have to present their dashboards at 3pm on the 29th, and finish up the day by writing a blog about this challenge! Good luck DS51!
