Day 1 as Project Manager

by Tara Robinson

Day 1 as project manager this blog is how I felt I done as project manager on my first day. We are working with IAG Cargo for this project where we are tasked with forecasting and creating an actions dashboard.

10am- Kick off call

Prior to the kick off call I was really unsure what the project was going to be  and what was going to be expected. Being the last project manager in my team, I believed the expectations of myself was high. I wanted to show that I could lead a team in a project as well as some other people have. At first the team was very quiet and we could talked more at the very beginning. But once she had presented what we were doing there were a lot more questions and we managed to maintain a professional call.

Data discovery

After the call I split everyone into two teams to work through the data. I was bouncing between both datasets just to make sure I had a clear understanding. Unfortunately, this data did not have a data dictionary and therefore we were having to make assumptions as a team. Luckily we had Matty to support us as he had a clear understanding of the data (who is currently on placement at IAG Cargo). We used his knowledge to help us push forward.

User stories and stand up

As a team we came together to write our user stories and to see where everyone was and to see if there was any particular barriers at this point.

Meeting with Client

We had a further meeting with the client to keep her updated with what was going on in the data. This was what the team told the client: The action dashboard team had a smaller dataset, so were able to wrap there heads round it relatively quickly and started exploring graphs on Tableau. The forecasting team had managed to wrap there heads round meanings of columns and were trying to work out what was relevant for this project.

Next Steps as PM

Next steps  as PM I plan to add more of a schedule into the day (half day) by adding more stand ups so everyone knows what stage everyone is at and it allows me to see if a certain team needs any further support. I also want to try keep the client involved with everything we done so another meeting / or emailed summary ( I want to be able to keep a professional relationship with the client and so shes always in the loop). All in all day one needed a lot of data discovery and I am excited to see what my team can do next.
