Learn What the Data School Learn.

by Tara Robinson

We were tasked with teaching a session for the general public on specific topics that we have been previously taught. This blog is going to give general tips for how we went about this.

First things first: Know your own topic.

It is important that you know your topic because if you do not get it or do not know it then you will struggle to teach it. For my Topic, Flavio and myself had macros, we had only been taught this a couple days prior. So what we done was watched some videos on what the different macros are to wrap our heads round how someone else has gone about teaching it. This will allow you to work out what your teaching style is.

Next: Always Plan.

You should always try write down a plan before creating any tasks or powerpoint. Once you have created a plan you have already got a structure behind this. For ours we worked together for the whole task. This allowed us to really wrap our heads round the task. Meaning either one of us could have done section 1 or 2. Below shows our Agenda.

Don't be afraid to ask for help

I think throughout my blogs I reiterate you should always ask for help if you are stuck or just need advice. For me and Flavio we had never really taught that much before, so we had questions for some of the coaches that involved what if we do not have an audience or if there are any questions we do not know how to answer. It was really useful getting insight on what they do and I believe this really helped when it came to actually teaching.

Is your lesson going to be interactive?

When creating your sessions you need to work out whether you want to create tasks for people to do, whether you want them to follow along or just watch you demo it. For our session we did all of the above because this allowed the audience to try it themselves and see if they could create it from our teaching.

Practice

The previous point leads to my next point you want to practice your session with someone else so they can try your tasks see if it is too challenging and it is always good to receive feedback. There is always room for improvement. Feedback was really useful for our session as we could see how long our sessions were, what worked, and what did not.

Try stay organized with your plan and when your teaching. I found that a few of my workflows were in the wrong order which threw me off when it came to teaching. Finally speak slowly keep checking in on your audience to make sure they are following if they need any help or have any questions.

Warning: you may have an audience who do not interact especially online and that's ok just keep going.
