Alteryx: Linear Regression

by Tom Dobson

Alteryx provides several tools with which we can perform predictive modelling. One of these is the Linear Regression tool, a package that allows users to estimate the value of a dependent variable based on the values of one or more independent variables. For example, you may want to predict height from the sizes of hands and feet. A successful linear regression requires that each of these values share a linear correlation. The tool is simple to set up and requires a name to which the model will be referred, a target variable that is to be predicted (e.g. height), and one or more Predictors (e.g. foot and hand size) which will be used to predict the Target. Further customisations to the model can be specified by selecting the Customise tab. Linear regression works by plotting the correlation between our Predictor and Target values. This correlation can then be used to estimate our Target.

The output of the Linear Regression tool comprises an output (O) as well as a static and interactive report (R and I, respectively). A Browse tool can be joined to each of these to explore the results. The O tab displays the model name as well as the size of the object in the results window. The R and I tabs contain more detailed summaries of the output and supporting charts
