What are Macro's?

by Zachary Ryan

Now that's a daunting question.

In our first lesson on Alteryx, we were given a sneak peek on what a Macro looked like. I will now do the same to you.

Seeing as how we had only just gotten used to some input tools and file paths, seeing that screenshot definitely made you remember that you were only scratching the surface and that there was more to come. After having a lesson on Macro's today, I can safely say that they're not that daunting at all.

But we also didn't make a fully functioning tool with containers and 20+ actions in it either.

Macro's, in essence, are one or more workflow processes that are brought into a single tool. They're beneficial as they allow organisations to standardise processes and also allows it's users to dynamically change filters to answer their own questions.

There are four different types of Macro's, with three of those being what we focused on today:

1. Standard Macro - a process consolidated into a single tool
2. Batch Macro - a process repeated per group selection, allowing data to be sent   out in batches or all at the same time
3. Iterative Macro - goal-orientated macro - repeating a process until a set end   point has been reached

Different Input/Output icons compared to regular Alteryx Input/Outputs

The Macro's that we've seen and played around with today show a lot of value and also convenience and I can't wait to see what else they can do, but I also know there will definitely be a lot of headaches when we start learning more about the intricacies of them.

But that's more of a future me problem.
