Dashboard Week Day 3: Survey of Income and Program Participation

by Andy Kriebel

After some really good presentations of yesterday’s data and even better analysis, we’ll switch gears today and have the team work with survey data, which is notoriously difficult to prep and visualize.

There are lots of great resources for analyzing and visualizing survey data, particularly Steve Wexler’s website datarevelations.com. Jeff Shaffer’s Tableau Reference Guide is another great website for finding Tableau-related content and tutorials.

SURVEY OF INCOME PROGRAM PARTICIPATION

SIPP is the premier source of information for income and program participation. SIPP collects data and measures change for many topics including: economic well-being, family dynamics, education, assets, health insurance, childcare, and food security.

~ U.S. Census Bureau

Like Monday and Tuesday, the focus needs to be on analysis. The data can be found on the SIPP website here. There are seven topics listed above. There should be one person on six of the topics and two people on one subject. Buzzfeed has an article for some context if it’s helpful.

Hopefully today they pay attention to the size of the data and don’t kill our wifi again.
