Dashboard Week Day 4 - Mapping UK Museums

Yesterday the team was asked to focus on approaching the data from an analytical perspective. There were hits and misses and that's part of the purpose of dashboard week. They all said they learned something, so let's see how they get on today because the task is the same.

They must focus on analysis and the process for finding insights in the data. Some feedback they were given:

  1. Once you find something that could be interesting, dig into that. Try to find more insights. Ask "why?". This is when you no longer stick to the most basic chart types. Think about how the data can be presented differently. For example, if you want to compare things, look at all of the charts that can be used to show variance. I gave them a long list of resources for different chart types.
  2. Think about the audience.
  3. Think about the end purpose of someone needing this chart for a specific purpose. To that end, it's important to define the purpose. Why does someone need this chart for this specific purpose?

The data today comes from this article by Mapping Museums. Part of the analytical process is to understand why the data was created in the first place. If they don't read the article and do some research on the website, they're unlikely to get insights.

The data can be found here.
