Picking my favourite week at the Data School is kind of like picking my favourite child; we all know I have one, I just can’t say who it is. It also well known that Dashboard Week is one I look forward to in every cohort. It’s a week that inspires me in many ways. So you’d think Dashboard Week might be my favourite, and maybe it is. But if it isn’t, then Makeover Week is right up there with it.

WHAT IS MAKEOVER WEEK?

Makeover Week always occurs during the first week of every cohort. In their first week they are absolutely inundated with information from getting their kit setup to the basics of data visualisation to the basics of Tableau, and oh yeah, they have a project too. Their project involves them making over one of the Data School application of their choice.

PASSIONATE PEOPLE LEARN FAST

What amazes me about Makeover Week is that we actually do very little Tableau, yet what they produce is absolutely astounding. The whole point of the first week is to send them down the right path in making good choices with their visualisations, clearly explaining their analysis, and telling a good visual story. They take all of this information and basically have a few hours on Friday to do their project. It’s their passion to learn, to be a part of the Data School, that catapults them forward in their learning.

As you look at the before and after of their work, you’ll notice a few common themes: simplification, effective use of colour, and guiding the reader through design. None of this is rocket science; their passion is what makes it work.
